Summary |
Author and photographer Richard Sobol investigates the unique Thai silk industry. In one continuous, first-person narrative, beginning with a brief history of silk, Sobol delves into specifics about each stage involved while including information about life in the remote village. The story focuses on the worms that produce the silk: the challenge of keeping them fed, how they make their cocoons, how the village girls keep the cocoons free of "poop," and how the silk threads are removed from the cocoons and dyed through a boiling process. The final section of the narrative explains how the threads are woven by hand into beautifully colored cloth. |
