The first American publisher, Macmillan, put numbers on the books and used the publication order: 1. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1950) 2. Prince Caspian (1951) 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) 4. The Silver Chair (1953) 5. The Horse and His Boy (1954) 6. The Magician's Nephew (1955) 7. The Last Battle (1956).
When HarperCollins took over the series, the books were renumbered using the internal chronological order, as suggested by Lewis's stepson, Douglas Gresham: 1. The Magician's Nephew (1955) 2. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1950) 3. The Horse and His Boy (1954) 4. Prince Caspian (1951) 5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) 6. The Silver Chair (1953) 7. The Last Battle (1956).

Summary Narnia, where owls are wise, where some of the giants like to snack on humans, where a prince is put under an evil spell, and where the adventure begins. Eustace and Jill escape from the bullies at school through a strange door in the wall, which, for once, is locked. It leads to the open door…or does it? Once again Aslan has a task for the children, and Narnia needs them. Through dangers untold and caverns deep and dark, they pursue the quest that brings them face to face with the evil Witch. She must be defeated if Prince Rilian is to be saved. Narnia is in peril, and only Eustace and Jill can help. Along with Puddleglum, a gloomy but valiant Marsh-wiggle, they are sent by the mighty lion Aslan to find Prince Rilian, heir to the throne. Their quest leads them past hungry people-eating Giants, and deep into the dark underground. But the true test for this noble band of friends comes when they face an evil witch and her deadly enchantments. - Publisher.
